Estimates life expectancy following TBI by applying an assessor-determined mortality adjustment to the Australian general-population life table. Every input is visible and editable, so the estimate can be reproduced and defended.
Enter the assessee's details and the mortality adjustment from your chosen evidence source.
Multiplier applied to age-specific mortality. 1.0 = general population. Draw the value for the assessee's disability severity from your cited source.
For a 35-year-old male, SMR 2.0.
Method & sources
The general-population baseline is the Australian Life Tables 2020–22 (single-year age-specific mortality rates and life expectancies, males and females), published by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and held within the tool.
The traumatic brain injury adjustment is not pre-set: the assessor supplies a standardised mortality ratio (or a direct percentage reduction) appropriate to the individual's age, sex and severity of disability, drawn from the peer-reviewed literature. In SMR mode the multiplier is applied to each age-specific mortality rate from the current age onward, the survival curve is rebuilt, and life expectancy is recomputed. In percentage mode the tool applies the stated reduction and back-solves the equivalent multiplier so the curve stays meaningful.
Long-term survival after TBI is understood to depend mainly on age, sex and severity of disability. This tool performs the arithmetic — the clinical judgement about which value to apply, and its justification, remains the assessor's.
